Standing in the Shadows of Motown

She will rock, and roll, you.

Midway through this reverent doc, which swings the spotlight onto Motown’s heart and soul – the Funk Brothers house band – a relative youngster strides to the stage.

Joan Osborne, the songstress behind “Right Hand Man” and “One of Us,” launches into a blistering, heartrending rendition of “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” and propels the film into a different dimension.

It remains my pick as the best musical moment captured in a film, with the sultry singer paying perfect tribute to those who came before, while fully claiming the stage for herself.

Truly legendary.
