The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Greed is good.

Especially when it’s fuel for great movies such as this John Huston-directed classic, which won three Oscars and should have nabbed more.

Humphrey Bogart leads a trio of prospectors deep into the heart of darkness, only to discover everything is rotten at the core of their hoped-for financial windfall.

The first time I saw this flick was late at night on a hotel room TV at age nine, after the family was evacuated when ash fallout from Mt. St. Helens threatened to swamp a nearby river.

On the run from a disaster, I found a cinematic revelation.
