The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Killing me softly with your song.

While it’s a bright, bouncy, ultra-colorful tale, boppin’ along with peppy music, Umbrellas sticks the shiv in deep during its operatic finale.

Worried about spoilers on a 56-year-old film? Cry me a river.

Prepare to get moist around the eyes as a soaring, but doomed, romance is forever shafted in one of the most gut-wrenching scenes captured on celluloid.

The final flickering embers of their love flying away in the gently-falling snow, Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo part forever, and the audience is left lying in a puddle of tears.

Agony, and ecstasy.
