Hoop Dreams

Hope dies hard.

Two young men chase basketball stardom, and the elusive lure of a ticket out of their downtrodden surroundings, in a landmark documentary.

Director Steve James spent five years tracking the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gates, celebrating the high points and documenting the struggles, and came away with a remarkable film.

Back in the day it was a scandal when Academy Awards voters whiffed on even nominating this.

Now, way down the road, a small bit of justice, as Hoop Dreams still amazes, while many recent Oscar winners have already been scrubbed from our collective memories.
