Love at first sight.
Look, Finding Nemo is a nice movie, but this French farce should have taken it to the cleaners when they went head-to-head for Best Animated Feature at the 2003 Oscars.
That would have meant back-to-back foreign films copping the award, with Japan’s Spirited Away winning in 2002, something I have no problem with.
Oscar voters, maybe so.
Ultimately what matters is not awards, but the depth of a film.
And this gently surreal tale of a feisty old woman facing off with the French mafia to free her kidnapped bicycle champ grandson, is a gem.
