Marked by controversy, with original director Richard Donner forced off the film, and touched by melancholy after the tragic deaths of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, this still remains a high-point among comic book movies.
There might be dispute over who shot what, but the film crackles with excitement, awe, and, above all else, joy.
Facing off with a trio of alien bad guys, led by Terence Stamp’s imperious Zod, our big, blue boy scout lands some crunching blows, while also finding time to awkwardly woo Lois Lane.
It’s the best cinematic version of Superman we’ve had.
