In a cast full of folks who can carry a tune, Idina Menzel mixes a sarcastic smirk with real hurt, owning every scene into which she saunters.

She gets competition, especially from others who also made the jump from stage to screen, like Jesse L. Martin and Anthony Rapp.

Creator Jonathan Larson gave every character a chance to shine, as individuals and as a group.

But it’s Menzel, struttin’ and wailin’, who’s the queen in this East Village chess set.

Lady has the blues, and lord, can she belt.
