Insomnia (1997)

Haunted by the light.

Stellan Skarsgård, who looks weary even in the best of times, is far from his happy place as he stalks a murderer while fleeing his own conscience.

Having arrived at a small Norwegian town bathed in the midnight sun, his troubled detective struggles to sleep, then makes a fatal, split-second mistake which will dog him.

Like the best film noirs, this superb foreign flick takes a decent, but weak man, then yanks the rug out from beneath his feet.

Watch him fall, watch him burn, director Erik Skjoldbjærg says, to which my response is, “Yes, sir.”
