Without a Clue

The game’s afoot.

This period-piece comedy, which a 17-year-old David saw on a first date with a redhead named Karen (not being a great detective, I can’t remember her last name…) retains its charms better than I have retained my memories.

Directed by Thom Eberhardt, who also gave us Night of the Comet and Captain Ron, it springs from the idea Doctor Watson was the brilliant one.

Meanwhile Sherlock Holmes was an idiot actor hired to fill the role of world’s greatest detective.

Michael Caine brings considerable class to his bumbling Holmes, in a largely-forgotten gem worth digging back up.
